MC number lookup
Type an MC number, with or without the letters, and get the carrier's full FMCSA record: whether its authority is active, the insurance on file, its safety rating, and its inspections and crashes.
What an MC number is
The docket number FMCSA assigns when a company applies for operating authority: permission to haul other people's freight or passengers for pay across state lines. The letters say which kind: MC for motor carriers, FF for freight forwarders, MX for Mexican carriers. A company can hold several.
A private fleet that hauls only its own goods has a USDOT number but no MC number. A company that offers to move your freight or your household goods between states and has no active MC authority is a warning sign.
MC number against USDOT number
The USDOT number is the registration, painted on the truck door. The MC number is the authority docket. Our record shows both, so either one finds the carrier. If an MC number brings up several carriers, you'll see a list to choose from.
FMCSA has long planned to retire MC numbers in favour of the USDOT number as the single identifier. The authority file we read still carries MC dockets, so both appear here and both work in the search box; check FMCSA's own notices for the current status of the change.
What the record shows for an MC number
- Authority status: common carrier, contract carrier and broker authority, each Active, Inactive or None, with any pending application or revocation.
- Insurance on file: the liability amount filed against the requirement, and whether cargo insurance and a surety bond are on file.
- Safety: FMCSA's safety rating where one exists, roadside inspections and out-of-service orders since January 2024, and reportable crashes.
- Registration: fleet and driver counts, cargo, officers and the business address, as filed on the carrier's last MCS-150.
Authority and insurance come from FMCSA's licensing and insurance file. The authoritative record is always FMCSA's own, linked from every carrier page.
